“The Ghost of Inhlosane”

Posted by: brettellis on: June 12, 2008

Local Legend has it that late at night a half man half Baboon roams these hills searching for his soul mate.

Those that knew the original story those that said they can see. Insist on staying indoors on misty nights especially after a full moon. They say the wild one steals young maidens and precious things thro open windows whilst the weary sleep.

The Sangoma`s throw the bones to protect the locals and to predict the next evil event, or to try to gain some useful insight into the behaviour of this half man, half Baboon.

On enquiring as to the Authenticity of this legion I some years ago spent a week hiking in the area speaking to the local tribal headman, seeking to unfold the mystery of the Ghost of Inhlosane .

Sitting around a smoky cooking fire the Elders told me that

many years ago a young full breasted maiden went missing in search of firewood, her search for the hardwood (best burning firewood) took her up to the top of the mountain (unnamed at this time) often clouded in mist the Mnt was only accessible via a narrow steep and winding footpath which past through a half acre of woodland know to be the foraging area of a troop of mountain Baboon.

The Elders say that the Alfa male of the troop was a particularly big and brave animal, often challenging any local herders who chanced upon his Mountain.

For some weeks the family of the young maiden searched……

The mountain in hope that they would find some sign of their missing daughter, after many weeks of vigil they had still no resolve.

One spring night after the Cycle of the full moon approximately 3 months after the maiden’s disappearance a violent storm erupted, the storm seemed localised around the mountain with the most violent lightning strikes at the point of the Mountain!

The story goes that when the storm had subsided the next morning the first thing that the local herdsman saw was that the shape of their sacred mountain had changed forever.

The shape they saw emerging through the mist was now one of a Maidens Breast ( Inhlosane )..

When the curious herdsman gathered at the base of the newly shaped mountain they found tether a magnificent black Ox,on its back wrapped carefully in a blanket of cowhide was the long dead body of a young maiden, also positioned as a gift along with a years supply of the best burning firewood, seemingly as a trade for something else of great value!

What really happened to the full breasted young maiden along with the violent and significant change in shape to the mountain will always be a mystery.

The Sangoma`s say that on misty nights after the cycle of the full moon a Huge Baboon can be seen silhouetted against the mountain peak ( now strangely shaped like a young maidens breast ) barking into the night!

What do you believe is the most likely story..?
