Local Legend has it that late at night a half man half Baboon roams these hills searching for his soul mate.
Those that knew the original story those that said they can see. Insist on staying indoors on misty nights especially after a full moon. They say the wild one steals young maidens and precious things thro open windows whilst the weary sleep.
The Sangoma`s throw the bones to protect the locals and to predict the next evil event, or to try to gain some useful insight into the behaviour of this half man, half Baboon.
On enquiring as to the Authenticity of this legion I some years ago spent a week hiking in the area speaking to the local tribal headman, seeking to unfold the mystery of the Ghost of Inhlosane .
Sitting around a smoky cooking fire the Elders told me that
many years ago a young full breasted maiden went missing in search of firewood, her search for the hardwood (best burning firewood) took her up to the top of the mountain (unnamed at this time) often clouded in mist the Mnt was only accessible via a narrow steep and winding footpath which past through a half acre of woodland know to be the foraging area of a troop of mountain Baboon.
The Elders say that the Alfa male of the troop was a particularly big and brave animal, often challenging any local herders who chanced upon his Mountain.
For some weeks the family of the young maiden searched……
The mountain in hope that they would find some sign of their missing daughter, after many weeks of vigil they had still no resolve.
One spring night after the Cycle of the full moon approximately 3 months after the maiden’s disappearance a violent storm erupted, the storm seemed localised around the mountain with the most violent lightning strikes at the point of the Mountain!
The story goes that when the storm had subsided the next morning the first thing that the local herdsman saw was that the shape of their sacred mountain had changed forever.
The shape they saw emerging through the mist was now one of a Maidens Breast ( Inhlosane )..
When the curious herdsman gathered at the base of the newly shaped mountain they found tether a magnificent black Ox,on its back wrapped carefully in a blanket of cowhide was the long dead body of a young maiden, also positioned as a gift along with a years supply of the best burning firewood, seemingly as a trade for something else of great value!
What really happened to the full breasted young maiden along with the violent and significant change in shape to the mountain will always be a mystery.
The Sangoma`s say that on misty nights after the cycle of the full moon a Huge Baboon can be seen silhouetted against the mountain peak ( now strangely shaped like a young maidens breast ) barking into the night!
What do you believe is the most likely story..?

We left at approx 8:15am and proceeded the 16 kms to Boarder post ( lots of washaways ,lose rocks and general lose stuff on the way up to the boarder.) The track obviously starts to challenge one right away you start the accent from the SA border post ( summer rains have created lots of deep ruts, big stones scattered across track) and notably one has to work hard to stay rolling and find the rhythm after each of these many challenging sections. Alan (normally so strong )started feeling poorly about a km after the border +- 17 kms in , after a short discussion It was agreed I would press on and return to meet up with him after topping out etc Our initial plan per your suggestion was to attempt to ride to Blackmountain +- 15 kms further on from the Sani top.
I was feeling good and managed to ride at a reasonable pace all the way until after the second hairpin( 1.5 kms from the top)as you know at this point the heart rate is off the chart and the throbbing in the temples starts, this along with an impossibly rutted ,lose and rocky track seemed well beyond both my physical or technical ability.I pushed from here and after Lesotho boarder post ,headed for the Top chalet pub and a quick social with the delightful hosts ( incidentally he freelances for My Photo and turned out to be the photographer on the first bridge stair section of Jeep H2H)
The weather was low cloud with a fresh cool wind and low dark cloud threatening inland ( i guess unsupported it might have been unwise to carry on ) I must admit I was a little concerned descending as to how brakes and handling would be, as the track was wet, with big lose rocks and bad ruts etc. On descending and approx 500 mts from the top- who should I meet but “Alan” the tough lad had sucked it up and was heading topside.( I waited for him in a semi sunny corner ,trying to stay out of the wind until he joined me after summating/ Lesotho passport control etc) After that our decent was fast and fun with no hassle at all. ( This lose rocky and rutted decent is hellish Hard on a Hard tail /I look forward to the future ownership of a dual susp)
My take on the ride is : Tough climbing but fun descending, enjoyed the technical stuff coming down ( not sure that I would want to schedule this as a monthly ride). Also ideally one needs to carry extra gear like rain jacket ,leggings extra bars and gels etc ( there is lots of water in summer,if you need) A great experience! one I think every Mnt biker should set up on his/her ride calendar at some stage.
Notes:
49.5 km return trip ( from Lodge)
